Can I grow 259 lbs fruit
259 lb fruit on my allotment
Is it possible to grow 259 lbs of fruit from my allotment and still have space for veg, lets explore the possibilities.
1 dwarf plum tree 30 lbs
1 cherry tree 20 lbs
1 apple tree 60 lbs
1 pear bush 25 lbs
3 gooseberry bushes 12 lbs
40 strawberry plants 30 lbs
4 rhubarb plants 10 lbs
10 raspberry canes 10 lbs
Blackberries 7 lbs mostly foraged from the wild ones around the site
Blackcurrant 7 lbs
2 Grape vines 14 lbs
2 Kiwi vines 40 lbs
Grand total = 265 lbs
There it is, my goal is it achievable? This is without thinking about the vegetables required.
With careful planning I think it is, I will grow veritcally as well as on the ground. If space is used well I believe I can achieve this by only using 1/5 th of my ground space. Trees will take the majority of the space with trees around the bottom planted with flowers to attract the bees for pollination. The tyre also act as a barrier for when my strimmer maniac husband cuts the grass lol. I picked these up like a lot of my items free of charge.
Where possible I will grow things in hanging baskets etc these will hang from the top of the fruit cage and the duck run. The ducks don’t need height so the 6ft head space is wasted. I plan on using this to hang baskets from and possibly train some go the trailing fruit and veg up the sides.
The raspberry canes can grow alongside the duck run but with a 1ft gap so they cant put there beaks through and eat them!! I can also put a table in the duck run so as not to limit their space but will give me an extra platform to grow pot grown fruit and veg. This would be good for tomatoes, strawberries, lettuce, radish, spinach and they will also be protected from the birds.
Rhubarb will also take a lot of space, but I love it. Im thinking of keeping the gooseberry bushes in their pots until the crowns are established, this would be a better use of the ground for the first 2 years.
So in short, YES I do think it is achievable.
