The allotment - about the space

When I originally took my allotment on I had great plans, unfortunately nothing was really achieved due to an operation and the onset of my worsening arthritis. Arthritis is something that most people will get in their lives but at the age of 44 I thought it wouldn't be this soon, this bad. My allotment is going to be my escape from the constant sitting indoors feeling sorry for myself. With the help of my son and husband I plan on providing all the fruit and veg that my  family of 6 need. Raised bed, footpaths and easy access to different areas will need to be created, while on a tight budget.

Already on the allotment is a stockpile of odd bits and long planks wood left over from previous jobs my husband has done at work. It has a greenhouse, shed and summer house which cost me a grand total of £5. Two runs measuring 3m x 6m are also on the allotment which cost me £25 for both, one is set up for my 3 ducks and the other has netting on.  My daughter dug a large hole and an old bath was put in it to make a pond to encourage frog for natural pest control.  I have another 2 baths on the allotment which I got from a plumber, he was more than happy for me to take them rather than pay for them to be put up the local tip.

The rest of the allotment needs a lot of work to get it looking like an allotment.  Raised beds will be made and we are lucky to have an unlimited supply of wood chip up our sit which I plan on using to make paths.

On the plots there was already an established blackcurrant bush which I have pruned back this year. I have brought 3 gooseberries last year from poundland which are looking good. I have brought an apple tree, pear bush and I have accumulated literally 1000s of seeds and won't need to buy and for a year or two.

So that is the basics and I will keep you all updated, I will be keeping a track of all the produce I haves and also how much money I have saved by producing my own fruit  and veg.

  1. Above all take it steady and enjoy what you do, especially in light of your arthritis. I'll be following your progress with interest. Happy plotting. Flighty xx
