Frog Spawn Update

Image
Frog Spawn Update 17th April 2018  After the big freeze we had i thought all my Frogs spawn had died. I was so happy when I saw movement a few days ago, then yesterday I saw tadpoles in the wildlife bath. There are so many tadpoles I feel so happy they survived. The bath has grass growing in it so I very carefully cut away some of the roots to give them swimming space, but left a lot with grass for protection. Update 19th April I went up to the allotment today and started to clear some of the grass to ensure there is enough space in the bath for the tadpoles. There was so many roots under the water I was  unsure where they would swim. To my surprise all of a sudden in the roots there was movement, much to my delight there was an adult frog in there. I stopped what I was doing immediately and left the frog well alone.

Spring has arrived

Spring is finally here   A male Robin sat on the spade, waiting for my husband stop dig up more bugs for him to feed his family. We actually have two male coming down and flying away with beaks full of bugs.  The black currant bush is really getting going now.  The onions I planted are all showing through, I think I only lost 2 of them to wildlife so far. I have 3 beds full, 75 onion in total so far.  I love rhubarb and its peeping through, cant wait to pick some. I put tyres around them because the husband is a bits trimmer happy, everything in his path is obliterated. Spring wouldn't be complete without some daffodils.

Preserving a years worth of fruit

Can I really preserve a years worth of fruit? Its all very well saying I can grow all the fruit I need to feed my family but can I preserve it all? Will I have enough jars, tubs and tubs saved? Do I have the space to keep it all for a year? Can I preserve enough fruit? Do I have enough jars, bags and tubs? For the months June, July, August and September the fruit can be cooked eaten and jam made and eaten straight from the source so that leaves the other 8 months. For the jam I will need 32 jars which when you think about it is a LOT of jars, however I have been saving all my jars for a lot of months now and still have a couple more months to go. I don't only save my jam jars but sauce jars, peanut butter, coffee jar and the list goes on. For the fruit pies and crumble I think its best to freeze the fruit in bags flat in the bottom of the freezer for easy storage which means I will need 64 freezer bags for this. That will only cost £1 for the storage of the fruit for t...
